Holy Week and Easter 2020
Holy Week and Easter are always a special time at Fondren. Many of our dearest traditions as a church are observed during these days each Spring.
The week begins with Palm Sunday and the celebratory waving of the palms as we sing together remembering Christ’s triumphant entry to Jerusalem. The palms remind us of the love and adoration of the crowd and also that Jesus is truly the king of our hearts and lives.
The week continues with Maundy Thursday and a new Fondren event this year, the Maundy Thursday meal. Tonight we will gather for worship around tables in the Fellowship Hall. As we recall Jesus’ last night with his disciples, we will break bread together and share a meal of foods representative of the cultures of Jesus’ world. We will not imitate or try to recreate that moment, rather by sharing the Lord’s Supper in the context of a meal with family and friends, we seek to encounter this gift in a new way.
Good Friday is a night of haunting silence and remembrance as we read the story of Christ’s arrest, trial, and crucifixion. Accompanied by Jimmy Sclater on the clarinet as in years past, this service by candlelight is a fitting end to the dark day of crucifixion which prepares us for the miracle of Easter.
The Great Vigil of Easter will have a new twist this year. Rather than begin in the courtyard and move to the sanctuary, we will (weather permitting) hold the entire service outside around the fire. In the darkness of a spring Jackson night, we will celebrate the light that warms us and reminds us of Christ’s impending return.
Finally, on Easter morning, we have a full schedule of activities and worship for the whole family. More details on Easter will be posted soon. For now, rest assured that great music, the flowering of the cross, and Dave’s famous pancakes will surely be a part!
