Black History Month Celebrated in Worship

February is set aside each year as Black History Month. During the month-long celebration of the unique contributions of African-American and Africans in America, we recognize both the contributions of the community to our larger national character and the responsibility to take stock and responsibility for our national history of racial discrimination and bias.

On February 9, Fondren will celebrate the contributions of African-American men and women to our denominational history. Our service will include a celebration of the prophetic witness of Presbyterians like biblical scholar Katie Canon and denominational leaders J. Herbert Nelson and Diane Moffett, the colonial work of Rev. John Glouchester, the first African-American pastor in colonial Presbyterian Church, and many more.

We will also take time to repent of our own sins of prejudice and exclusion. Leaning on the hope and mercy of God, we pray for a more just and equitable world where all of God’s children are valued and cherished without regard to race, gender, nationality, or any other human category.
